Outside the Box

The past couple of weekends have included some experiences that are definately out of my comfort zone, but surprisingly I have enjoyed them--some more than others. Anyone who knows me well knows that I am not an outdoors girl, I can't handle blood, I hate being lost, and I don't like feeling scared! A couple Sundays ago, we went out on the boat with Chad's family and I decided that I was going to swim in the lake--(something I am very uncomfortable with for numerous reasons.) I felt that I should overcome my fear since Addison enjoys "Fwimming" in the lake so much. Once I got in the water, I very quickly noticed several small fish jumping right by my head and I really did try to stay in the water and stick it out in between my screams of terror, but it honestly lasted less than five minutes before I gave up. I am ashamed to say that I was outlasted by Lyn, Galen, Heather, Dave, Jackson, Riley, and Addison. Following the fish attacks, we noticed a sea gull flying above the boat, so Heather decided to try to feed it a chip. Well, one sea gull turned into about 25 and they kept getting closer and closer to the boat I took pictures but I do have to say that I was sweating behind the camera.
Last weekend, I survived a weekend of camping and canoeing with little to no complaining. I do credit my survival of the weekend to the shortage of bugs, the lack of heat/humidity, and the absence of snakes and spiders on the river.

I have two reasons for posting this blog:
#1 I wanted to pat myself on the back for attempting to overcome a few fears, and
#2 I am really interested to hear what other bloggers are uncomfortable with or strongly dislike.

Hey Erin! Glad to hear you stepped out of your comfort zone. I'm like you when it comes to lakes (and oceans)- if I think too much about the "creatures" swimming with me I freak myself out. I'm not nearly as bad in the lake, though. I am perfectly comfortable swimming in the lake, but to be honest, I'm only comfortable when we are in Will's dad's cove. If I hop off the boat to cool off in a different part of the lake, I tend to freak out a bit and immediately climb up the ladder to safety. I don't know why I'm only scared of certain parts of the lake. It's not like his dad's cove is fish-free.

Camping is another thing I used to not be wild about, but have grown to really like. Although I will admit, that I like "car" camping much more than "backcountry" camping. I am not so much a fan of carrying my camping gear on my back while I hike to a campsite where you can't even make a fire! I may not be hardcore, but to me camping involves a fire, s'mores, beer, and easy access to your car. So you can bring things like pillows and air mattresses. :)
